I have been using the Xfinity wireless access point at my mother inlaws house to connect their computer to the internet for a few months now. I have a Comcast account that is current, however, when I went over to her house today she was complaining that the wireless was not connecting to the internet. I try my usual troubleshooting steps of disabling/enabling the wireless adapter in Windows, restarting the computer, etc.
So when the above steps did not work, I noticed that when I attempted to reconnect to the secured Xfinity wireless access point, I am presented with a Windows Authentication dialog. Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing when trying to connect
I know when I first connected her laptop to the Xfinity SSID, it opened a webpage and had me authenticate to some sort of Comcast captive portal, which is what I would expect to open if it wanted me to authenticate, however, this prompt is similar to what I would expect to see if I was trying to authenticate to a page that was using basic http auth.
Anyway, I took her laptop home to troubleshoot the issue - and at home, I am getting the same exact login prompt shown in the screenshot. Another possibility I was thinking of was someone was attempting to impersonate the Xfinity SSID to capture login/password info, but now that I am seeing this at home as well I do not think this is actually what is going on.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why I am getting this strange authentication prompt when trying to connect to the Xfinity SSID?
